How to book the Goethe A1 exam in Pakistan: registration step by step

Short answer
Goethe A1 exam registration in Pakistan happens online on the Goethe-Institut Pakistan website. Create a My Goethe.de account in advance, find your exam date and the day booking opens, book as soon as it opens, and pay within 24 hours or your booking is cancelled. Seats are limited in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, so be ready before booking day.
Before you book: what do you need?
Get three things ready a few days before booking opens. Booking day is busy and seats go quickly, so anything you prepare in advance saves you minutes when it matters.
- A My Goethe.de account, created with your name exactly as it appears in your passport. Your results will appear in the same account later.
- Your passport details, typed exactly as printed.
- A plan for paying within 24 hours of booking, following the instructions you'll receive in your booking confirmation.
We don't book exams for students, and nobody can book a Goethe seat for you in a special way. We explain how booking works and make sure you're ready before booking day.
How do I book the Goethe A1 exam in Pakistan?
Booking is done online, one exam date at a time. Each date shows the city and the day it becomes bookable. Follow these steps, and check the Goethe-Institut Pakistan website for the current details before you start.
- Create your My Goethe.de account a few days early, with your name exactly as in your passport.
- On the Goethe-Institut Pakistan website, open the German exams section and choose Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1.
- Pick an exam date and city: Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad (where the exam is held at NUML). Note the "Bookable from" day for that date.
- On booking day, be online before booking opens, with your passport details ready. If the website is slow, keep trying.
- Complete the booking and save the confirmation. It includes your booking reference.
- Pay within 24 hours, exactly as the confirmation explains. If you don't pay in time, the booking is cancelled automatically.
- Keep your confirmation and the ID it asks for ready for exam day.
Why do seats go so quickly?
Demand is high and places are limited. The Goethe-Institut in Pakistan warns of very heavy traffic on registration days. Many people apply for spouse visas at the same time, and each exam session can only take a limited number of candidates.
That's why preparation matters: an account that's ready, details you can type quickly, and a backup date in another city if you can travel. If you miss one date, the next one will open later.
When does booking open, and what are the dates?
Each exam date has its own booking day, shown as "Bookable from" next to the date. In the past, booking has usually opened about two weeks before the exam, but always go by the date shown on the Goethe website.
Exam dates and the exam fee change, so check them on the Goethe-Institut Pakistan website rather than relying on lists shared on social media.
How should I plan the exam around my visa?
For a spouse visa, the A1 certificate must be no older than one year on the day you apply. Results arrive about 4 weeks after the exam, and if you don't pass you can take it again. So plan backwards from your visa appointment:
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| About 2 months before the exam | Start an A1 course and practise every day. |
| 2–3 weeks before booking opens | Create your My Goethe.de account and choose your date and city. |
| Booking day | Book as soon as booking opens, then pay within 24 hours. |
| Final weeks | Do full mock exams under time and fix your weakest part. |
| About 4 weeks after the exam | Check your result on My Goethe.de. |
Leave room for a second attempt if your visa date allows it. For the full picture of the exam itself, read the Goethe A1 exam guide, and for the visa side, see German spouse visa requirements.
What if I can't get a Goethe seat?
Try the next date, or a date in another city if you can travel there. For a spouse visa, the German Embassy also accepts A1 certificates from ÖSD, telc and TestDaF, and ÖSD has a licensed centre in Lahore. Compare them in Goethe, telc or ÖSD: which A1 certificate.
How do I get ready before booking day?
Booking a seat is the easy part; being ready to pass is what takes time. Our A1 German course online runs 6–8 weeks, one-to-one on Zoom, with mock exams in the Goethe format, so you can book with confidence. Not sure of your level? Try the free German level test.
